FAQ

Putting greens and high-traffic zones may require more. Once you know your turf type and square footage, our team can help you calculate the exact number of bags so you’re not short—or overbuying.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”What type of infill should I use for my project?” tab_id=”faq5″][vc_column_text]Silica sand is a dependable choice for general landscaping and light-traffic areas. Zeo-Odour is ideal for pet spaces where odour control matters. Turf Armour is best for high-traffic zones, playgrounds, and commercial installs that need extra durability. In some cases, a blended approach gives the best balance of support, drainage, and comfort.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Is infill really necessary for artificial turf?” tab_id=”faq2″][vc_column_text]Yes. Infill helps weigh the turf down, keeps blades standing upright, protects the backing, and improves drainage performance. On putting greens, it also controls ball roll and speed. Skipping infill usually leads to matting, wrinkles, and a surface that feels thin or unstable underfoot—especially in Canadian weather.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Can I install turf infill myself?” tab_id=”faq3″][vc_column_text]Many homeowners spread infill themselves with a drop spreader and a stiff broom or power broom. The key is applying in light passes, brushing the blades up between coats, and avoiding big piles or streaks. For large or commercial projects, working with an experienced installer can save time and ensure a perfectly even finish.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Which infill is best for pet and dog areas?” tab_id=”faq6″][vc_column_text]For dog runs and pet-heavy yards, we recommend Zeo-Odour or a blend that includes it. Zeolite’s porous structure helps absorb ammonia from urine and reduce smells while still supporting drainage and blade structure. Pairing it with silica sand can provide extra weight and stability in high-use areas.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Which infill is best for high-traffic turf?” tab_id=”faq7″][vc_column_text]Turf Armour is designed for busy spaces that see constant foot traffic, equipment, or sports use. Its angular, emerald-green granules resist compaction and interlock with the turf fibres to keep the surface firm and stable. It’s an excellent choice for playgrounds, sports zones, rooftops, and commercial walkways.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Does infill affect drainage performance?” tab_id=”faq8″][vc_column_text]Properly installed infill helps water move through the turf system rather than sit on the surface. Clean, well-graded silica sand and zeolite allow water to flow through to the backing and base. Overfilling or using contaminated material can slow drainage, so it’s important to use the right product and follow recommended coverage rates.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”How do I maintain turf infill over time?” tab_id=”faq9″][vc_column_text]Routine maintenance is simple: occasionally broom or power broom the turf to lift the fibres, redistribute infill, and loosen any compacted areas. In heavy-use zones, you may top up infill after a few years to restore support and appearance. For pet areas, rinsing with water and using odour-control cleaners helps keep the system fresh.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_accordion][vc_column_text]

I Need Infill But I Not Sure What Type

When it comes to infill for your artificial turf, understanding the differences between silica sand and zeolite sand can help you determine what you have and if you need more. Silica sand is typically light tan or off-white and is used primarily for its weight and stability. This sand helps keep the turf in place and supports the blades so they stand upright, maintaining a natural look. It is also highly durable, resisting breakdown over time. You can identify silica sand by looking for light-colored granules and feeling the substantial weight when you press down on the turf.

On the other hand, zeolite sand, which is usually green or grayish-green, offers unique benefits like odor control and cooling. Zeolite effectively absorbs odors, especially from pet urine, by trapping ammonia and other compounds. It also helps reduce the turf’s surface temperature, making it cooler underfoot during hot weather. If you notice green or grayish-green granules mixed in your turf and experience less odor and cooler surface temperatures, you likely have zeolite sand.

Proper infill levels are crucial for the performance and longevity of your artificial turf. You should have between 1.5 to 3 pounds of infill per square foot. If you have insufficient infill, you may notice several issues. Flattened or compressed turf blades that do not spring back after being stepped on indicate a lack of infill. Weed growth can also be a sign, as gaps in infill allow weed seeds to take root. Persistent odors, especially from pets, suggest the need for more odor-absorbing infill like zeolite. A hot turf surface in the sun may mean you lack enough infill to help with cooling. Reduced cushioning, making the turf feel hard and less comfortable, is another sign you need more infill.

To check and add infill, start with a visual inspection to ensure a consistent layer of infill between the blades. Press down on the turf; it should have a noticeable cushion. If it feels too firm or flat, measure the current infill in a small area. If it’s below the recommended amount, Premium Grass Blades can spread more infill evenly across the turf and brush it in thoroughly. Maintaining the right amount of infill, whether it’s silica sand or zeolite sand, will enhance the appearance, performance, and longevity of your artificial turf.
